Anyone remember last years' post called "When I am not Quilting... I am Sewing... and I am Weaving" ? My Mom and I made 16 woven baskets!
Today's Hodgepodge Patchwork Tuesday is in honor of my Mom. If you read last week's Thursday's Thoughts you will know that my Mom inspired me to craft! My cousin put up on Facebook that my Mom inspired her to weave. Many of you comment and email about your Moms and those people who inspired you to craft, sew, and quilt.
Today I am sitting in a hospital room with my Mom in her home town of Fort Atkinson. After numerous tests it has been determined that she has pancreatitis. This was probably caused by gall stones--a few small ones and one large one. We met with her doctor and a surgeon and the determined her gall bladder needs to be removed. So tomorrow morning, Wednesday, she will have surgery to have it removed. This all came on very suddenly and I rushed over to be with her. We are in a good place and they are taking good care of my Mom.
The first photo above it of us is from when we made the passage quilt for hospice. My nephew, Alex was taking the picture and was making us laugh!
Here we are at Barb's Quilt Retreat last November. We were weaving, weaving, weaving... Mom is in the striped sweater on the left side of the picture.
We kept busy the whole weekend just weaving the days away!
Well you can see Mom was working, but I think at this point in the retreat I was running around taking pictures. I could have been talking and laughing, as I tend to do a lot of that.
When we got home to my house, we set up our little sweat shop in my dinning and living room and made more baskets. I quilted on customer's quilts in the mornings and then we would weave away the afternoon....
I don't cook anyway, so who needs a dining room table?
Pattern information on other post.
So thank all the people in your life for inspiring you to craft, sew, and quilt!
Today's May for Me Giveaway is simple, as it needs to be for me, because I am not at home...but I have my laptop with me!
It's a Double-double Prize! I will draw two winners on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 6pm. Two winners to represent the one who inspired you and one for you! Each winner will receive a set of May for Me Note Cards and The Easy To Sew Quilt Pattern. Two prizes each!

Remember to enjoy each day in May!

I have to credit my greatgrandmother for the crafting, sewing inspiration. Her love of buttons (I have many), special beadwork, tatting, learning to soak reeds for baskets and how to cane chairs - her love of her flowers and how to arrange them. Even knitting and crocheting. (follower) - oh yes - we even did repair work on the leather harnesses for the farm work horses. - She even taught me how to weld.
ReplyDeleteMy inspiration comes from my mother who started me on the path of sewing and quilting, among other crafts. She is my sounding board for my quilt projects. Just today she helped me balance the colors/values for a block layout of a sampler quilt top. She has a natural eye for color.
ReplyDeleteMy Mother was the "crafty" one, my grandmother was the "sewer" and my sister was the "creative" one. All thrown in a basket = ME! great giveaway! gougeonathome@charter.net (Allison)
ReplyDeleteI forgot to leave a comment that I follow your blog.
ReplyDeleteI have to say my mother inspired me. She made everything while we were growing up. I wish she was still here to teach me to knit because I couldn't learn back then and I still haven't. Both my grandmothers also drafted and made garments. I am a follower.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad was my inspiration he taught me to embroider and my uncle in Denmark taught me other sewing crafts so the men in our family have been the creative ones :)
ReplyDeleteWishing your mum a speedy recovery and i know how painful stones in the pancreas is !! worse when there in infection keeping her in my thoughts (hug)xxx
Good luck all xxx
I've always had a creative bent I guess. Mom recognised that in me and made up a craft box for me. She would put yarn, pipe cleaners, toilet paper rolls, tissue paper, gum wrappers...just about anything she thought I could use to create. I used that box for years!!!! My first sewing 'lessons' were on lace up cards; then she gave me the cut off hems when she hemmed slacks...lots of polyester in those days LOL! I started my first patchwork with those and all by hand....I thank her for encouraging that spark for making things with my hands and imagination.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom is my sewing and stitching mentor. Mt thoughts are with your Marcia. P.S. Don't enter me in the giveaway today
ReplyDeleteI think for me what inspired me the most are the ladies in the family. They were always saying "I can make that" no matter what it was, be it flowers arrangements or window treatments and even clothing. My mom use to make my clothes for school. My aunt could make anything. She is truly creative in every way. She now paints and is a self taught hand quilter among other things. I was always drawn to a needle and thread so I taught myself how to cross stitch (I think I was 10 yrs old). From then on I've loved sewing.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I follow you :)
The person who inspired me to start quilting is my youngest sister. She made a beautiful wall hanging for her first quilting project and it looked so boos and gave the room a homey feeling. It was at that moment that I was hooked!
ReplyDeleteMy Aunt Arliss has been my inspiration for all things crafty. She is a wonderful teacher and a fantastic quilter. She has also taught me basket making and counted cross stitching. My only regret is that we live three states apart and we can't share much crafty time together.
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot to add that I am a regular follower. Prayers for a quick recovery for your mom!!
ReplyDeleteI'm a regular follower. My friend Lisa inspired me to be crafty.
ReplyDeleteOf course I follow you, oh fearless "May for Me" leader! Sending get well wishes to your mom!

I had been sewing for years, to help clothe our three kids, and make play costumes, etc.
ReplyDeleteThen my big (three years older, to the day!) sister in California got me started on quilting. It's been a joy to me ever since, to have this creative outlet, and to share a hobby with her. We talk and skype often, and are closer now than ever before!

I don't think I can honestly say any one person inspired me to craft sew or paint, but...both my Mom and my Grandmother were very crafty people. Neither one encouraged me to do it, first because by the time I was old enough, my Grandmother was not doing it any longer, and second because my Mom was one of those people who allowed you to choose your own path. But I do think growing up in a house where my Mom sewed and crafted was an influence.
ReplyDeleteFollower.
I am a new follower. I like to give credit for two people who started me on my way for crafting, sewing and quilting. The first person would be my mom and the second one is my good friend Maryellen. I was going to wait until I retired to start guilting and she changed my mind and I am so glad she did.
ReplyDeleteI too am a new follower. I too will have to give my grandmothers credit for starting me on the road of quilting, sewing, crocheting and crafting. My mom's mom taught me to sew on an old treadle machine when I was 7 and I am now in my 50s so that is over 40 years of crafting for me. :) I hope I have inspired others to also express their creativeness too. And even if I don't win the prize, I just wanted to say those baskets are gorgeous! And you have inspired me to give them a try sometime. Thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteI just became a new follower, and my mom inspired me to quilt. I remember when I was growing up that she would make quilts after cutting many little 3" squares from cardboard. I helped her sometimes. We've come a long way since those little squares! I'd love to win your giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower and my great aunt inspired me to sew. She sewed many of my clothes growing up and then taught me to use her sewing machine.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful baskets you were making.
I'm a new follower of your great blog. My inspirations come from my childhood when I gathered little scraps of leftover fabrics and ran to my grandmother's PFAFF sewing machine, a pedal one and made my little dolls dresses, blankets and other accessories.
ReplyDeleteIt's my mother who inspired me to craft. she used to sew our clothes for any occasions. and her work was so neat ( I am yet to come to that stage, though :D )
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance - I follow!
I am a new follower. My mother, a seasoned garment sewer, inspired my love of sewing. She became interested in quilting not long before she learned that she had cancer. I am happy to carry the torch onward in her honor.
ReplyDeleteAnother person who inspires me with her brilliant creativity is blogger Pat Eaton of "Bird Nest on the Ground." Her projects are amazing, and she is always eager to share her ideas and knowledge with others.
I'll be honest, I'm not a follower (yet). Two wonderful ladies inspired me to quilt. My great grandmother, who quilted, and my grandmother, who sewed clothes on a treadle machine and wanted me to learn how to sew (I never really learned, but, I now quilt, self taught). Also my daddy, who really wanted me to learn to sew.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inviation to enter your fun giveaway. My Mom sewed for me a lot, but it was easier to let her do it than to learn. Once I was on my own and far away from home I found I wanted to sew and had to find a helper. A dear neighbor was so patient and helpful. Now she is in Alaksa and my Mom is my biggest fan. I don't know what I would have done without the two of them.
ReplyDeleteI am a very new Follower, Marcia and so happy to have found your blog.
ReplyDeleteLike Belinda I can't say any one person inspired me to craft, sew and quilt.
I do know that when I was about 8 a neighbor have me a wadded up ball of embroidery floss that I thought was heaven. Spent many hours untangling and then my Mom showed me the outline embroidery stitch - that was it.
My love of knitting began in high school where ALL THE GIRLS were knitting sox for their boyfriends so I had to follow suit.
It's not left my thoughts and free time since.
Thanks so much for the chance to enter your giveaway, Marcia.
Those are really cute baskets!!!
