Hodgepodge Patchwork Tuesday - Canning Lid Pin Cushion

Supplies:  a ball of poly fiber fill, one wide mouth canning ring, two wide mouth lids, one 7 1/2" square of cotton fabric, and a hot glue gun with fast drying glue sticks and an old towel or old oven mitts to hold the ring when gluing. Of course use caution with a hot glue gun.  I took the photos without the hot glue gun and the old oven mitts.  I didn't use the glue either, but it will be very clear where to apply it. I wanted you to see the steps clearly, so I took lots of photos. Important --- Read all the steps before you start.
Form the poly fiber fill into a ball.  I used straps of poly batting and cut a circle of batting and formed it around the poly fiber fill and hand stitched it at the bottom.  See photo. (sorry the photo isn't real clear - but you can get the idea).

Put the stitched part of the ball down on the table, so the smooth part of the ball is up.  Place the fabric centered over the ball. Place the ring over the fabric and the ball like the photo.
Place one of the lids on the bottom with the white part out and push it into the ring against the ball of fiber fill.  Wrap the fabric around the lid.  Bring the loose edges around the lid to make sure they are going to tuck under evenly. Check the top of the pin cushion to make sure the fabric is all tucked in the under the ring.  See the next three photos.

Now that you have checked to see if it will all tuck around the lid, lift the edges of the fabric back and apply hot glue on the white part of the lid under the little flaps of fabric and squish them back down against the lid. The glue will be HOT -- You could use an old wooden spoon to push on the fabric to tuck it down tight.  See the next two photos.

Take the ring back off and put hot glue on the inside of the ring and carefully and quickly place it back over the fabric and the ball.  The ring gets hot and the glue may get on the fabric.  You can pick the dried glue off the fabric later.  This is where I use an old towel or old hot mitts to hold the ring onto the ball to hold it tight as it dries.  Make sure the ring sits down tight on the fabric and the lid.
Take the other lid and apply hot glue on the white part and place it against the fabric on the bottom of the pin cushion so the shining part is on the bottom.  Reminder:  It will be HOT use the old oven mitts or old towel to hold it tight against the fabric while it dries.  See next four photos.

Just add pins, needles, and safety pins and it is ready to use.

Several years ago I taught a summer school class called "Crafty Sewing" for about 10 summers in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. I made these with my students.  I wanted them to always have a safe place to keep their pins and needles.  When working with my students we used old oven mitts to protect their fingers from the HOT glue.

Hope you have fun making them!

  1. That is sew cute! I love the fabric you used for it. If you didn't put the last lid on, you could put this over a jar of buttons, just for cute, to use beside your machine.

  2. I am so glad you did a tutorial on this. I loved the rather battered one you had in a previous post and was curious how it was made.

  3. I like simple pincushions like this. So easy and cute! I actually just bought a little tin mold to make one that is similar. It's on that long to do list...

  4. I was thinking the same thing as Cheryl about putting the lid on a jar and using it to keep extra pins especially the cute 1/2 pint jars used for jelly. I love this idea!
