Getting Up Close to My Quilting --- Two Color Ribbon Quilting with Tropical Flowers

I have found that I need more information for you - my readers. I am starting to gather more information, before I share my posts about "Getting Up Close with My Quilting".

For example:
The quilt pattern and where you can get it.
Did my customer redesign the original pattern for their quilt.
Or did my customer create the quilt pattern.
If the fabric is unusual, I may need to gather that information too.
If it is vintage, how old is it?
and the list goes on....

Today's quilt was inspired by a quilt my customer saw that Tula Pink designed. She made it fit the fabrics she had gathered from over the years.

I emailed my customer for more information as this is a really COOL quilt design and I knew I would have lots of questions.

My Customer replied:
"The quilt was made up from orphaned fabrics that just seemed to go with a little triangle head scarf my mother bought me while I visited the Key West print block fabric shop when I was in second grade.  I must have been bothering her for another, so she swooped up the orange print from a scrap bin.  Thus the inspiration.  The design of the quilt is a rendition of one Tula Pink had done.
I just love the colors!"

My customer is talking about the two larger pieces of fabric in the center.  This will make a wonderful memory quilt from her trip with her Mother.  She added the label from the scarf to the quilt.

To add some interest to the backside of the quilt, she added a center stripe. Personally, I love pieced backs.  It gives you a cool flip side of the quilt.

Tula Pink's quilter uses a double batting.  It makes the quilting really stand out. My customer asked me to use a double batting for her quilt.  I have tried a couple different combinations and have found that an 80/20 batting on the bottom and a poly on the top works the best.

I used three thread colors for the quilting.  Yellow and a Lite Orange for the Two Color Ribbon Quilting and the Tropical Flowers. And a Bright Green for the border and for quilting on the large green ric rac.

This is getting really close to my quilting!

I also offer a service to my quilting customers of an all machine embroidery stitched binding.  My customer selected a green fabric for the binding.

She stitched (basted) her ric rac on with a lite colored thread, which she will pull out now that the quilting is completed.

The green binding looks great with the green ric rac!

I selected a zig zag embroidery stitching for this quilt, as it echos the ric rac design.

When my customer received her quilt, it is was all complete and ready to use.  She will be hanging it on the wall in her quilting room, where she can enjoy it's beauty and memory everyday.

Enjoy!

Sunday's Scraps - Leftovers from my Strings of Sunshine Table Topper

What do you do with your leftover scraps?

If you only have a few, put them in a jar. I save them to remember the quilt I made, as I am usually making it for someone else, like we all do. I like to make a little label and put it in the jar.  That way years from now I will remember the quilt.

I had a lot of scraps and they were some big chunks leftover from the dresden sections and the yellow background.

I started cutting and sewing to see what I could make. Maybe I could make some hot pads to go with the table topper.

As I was stitching and cutting, my battery on my camera went dead.  I could not stop sewing, so I took the next couple photos with my phone.

I stitched yellow strips around the green rectangular pieces to make them more square.

I had to cut the yellow background chunks into strips so I could use them as borders.

I completed four nice "squarish" blocks. As I laid them out in a row to iron them, I decided that they would make a perfect table runner.

I had room to quilt them with the table topper.

At first, I was just going to quilt it with small meandering and then I got the idea to make little dresden plate designs on the table runner.

I added my name in two places, just in case I decided to cut it into hot pads or smaller sections.

A view of the back side and it is ready for the binding.

I selected another zig zag type of embroidery stitching for the binding.

I laid it out on the table, while I still had some natural light.

I placed a few dishes on it for a few more photos.

Most of my dishes are blue or pink. I only have a few with green patterns.  But I know my daughter will have some that will look great on the table runner.

I flipped it over as it would look pretty on the backside too.

I folded it, so you can see the front and the back.

It has the two fabrics on the backside, like the table topper.

I am pleased with my Scrappy table runner made from the scraps from my Strings of Sunshine Table Topper.

What do you do with your leftover scraps?

Enjoy!

"Strings of Sunshine" for Show and Tell Saturday and Project Quilting

I completed my Project Quilting - Season Five - Challenge ONE - Strings.  I named it "Strings of Sunshine".

Sharing photos of how I completed my quilted table topper.

Heat on bond lite for the back of the dresden plate block.

Up close to the quilting...

Wiggle lines, swirls, and small meandering for the background.

Embroidery stitched binding - I chose the zig zag stitch where the stitching runs up and down each zig zag and I made it smaller.  It kind of echos the points of the dresden plate points.

Views from all angles.

The backside.

A full view.

This is the table that I made the Strings of Sunshine Table Topper for.  My daughter and her husband have it on their patio. When we visited them, we ate most of our meals on this table.  On a cloudy day it will bring sunshine to their little table, as it rains there almost every day.

I selected two fabrics for the backside and placed the seam off center.

There were a lot of leftover scraps.  I used them for another quilted project for a Sunday's Scraps Post. I will share it tomorrow on Sunday, Jan. 12th.

Thanks for following along with my Strings Quilted Project for Project Quilting.  Everyone who completed a quilted project will be sharing them by Sunday, Jan. 12th at Noon on the Project Quilting Flicker Site. Hop over and check them out and hop over to Persimons Dreams Blog - Host of Project Quilting.

Enjoy!
