Hodgepodge Patchwork Tuesday --- Colorful Caps

When my Mom left the hospital, they gave her a few surgery disposable caps.  It fit nicely on her head and tied in the back.  It wasn't too tight, but stayed securely on her head. They shaved a good portion of her hair and she has a ton of stitches. The surgeons successfully removed two brain tumors and they are not cancer!  YES!

Since this little cap fit so nicely, we decided she needed a couple colorful caps to protect her head while her hair grows back and her head heals.

This cap has a double layer of fabric on the sides.

The Doctors said she will have to protect her head from the sun too.  

This one is a butterfly fabric. I made this one with a single layer of fabric and a stitched hem.

My Mom cut her hair short right before the surgery, so it would be easier to take care of.

Here's the original disposable cap. I took it apart to make a pattern.

I am not giving you any measurements --- just guiding you through what I did to make them.

I did not want a binding edge like this cap had, so I doubled the size of it and folded it in half.

The straps.

I stitched them and turned them right side out.

Stitched the straps to the edge of the cap.

Marked with the pins some halfway points for lining it up.

and on the strip too.

Pinned to make a few gathers and eased the rest of it.

I used the point of my scissors to make little tucks in the cap part.  I know I could have stitched a basting stitch and pulled it, to gather it, but there's only a little gathering to do on the top of the cap.

I stitched from the end to the center and then turned it around and stitched from the other end to the center.

I could have serged or zig zagged the raw edge, but I didn't as it will only be used for a couple months and it will wash up just fine!  If I were making it to sell, I would have finished the raw edges.

I flipped the little point at the back up and stitched it.

Mom has two cool colorful caps to wear as her hair grows back and they will protect her head too!

Hodgepodge Patchwork Tuesday - Progress on the Green Donation Quilt

Mom and I worked on and off all week on the courthouse round blocks.  I stitched and Mom pressed.  On March 17th, we arranged them on the bed.  Two more to go and then we will have 49 - 10 inch blocks.  That's 7 rows by 7 rows. We placed the lattice fabric under the blocks with the corner stones just to see how it will look.

I cut the lattice strips and then stitched a few of them together.

I stitched one lattice strip to the left side of the blocks and then stitched a corner stone to a strip and added it to the bottom of the block.
I will need two - 10 inch strips for each block. I will need 7 strips for the last side and 7 strips for the top side of the quilt top after I sew the rows together. This will make sense, when I share the next steps and photos in two weeks. The lattice strips are 2 1/2" wide by 10" long. The corner stone is a 2 1/2" square.

We did not finish sewing them, as we put it away and we will work on it again in about two weeks when Mom comes back to visit again.

The courthouse round block is a fun block to make especially when using scraps.  There are about 40 different green fabrics in this quilt.  We are pretty sure there are no duplicate blocks.  There is a one draw back to using so many different fabrics.  They are all different weights and thicknesses, even though they are all 100% cotton fabrics.  Some of them stretch and pull a little.  All in all, I love how it is looking! 

The center square is 2 1/2" by 2 1/2".

All of the strips are 1 1/2" wide.

Round One 

2 strips: 

1 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" long

and  1 1/2" by 4 1/2"

Round Two

2 strips:

1 1/2" by 4 1/2" and  1 1/2" by 6 1/2"

Round Three

2 strips:

1 1/2" by 6 1/2" and  1 1/2" by 8 1/2"

Round Four

2 strips:

1 1/2" by 8 1/2" and  1 1/2" by 10 1/2"

Do you remember how I arranged the strips into the drawer organizer? 

 Then Mom would select the strips for each block and placed them on a paper towel and then in a new pizza box.

We took photos of each other as we were working on the blocks.

I can't wait to work on the quilt again. Two weeks will be here before I know it!

I started my Project Quilting Challenge Number Six last night. It's a Zig Zag Challenge.  

I am ziggin' outside the zag on this one! I am using some of the scraps from our green quilt.

I started with cream fabric and the leftover strips.

I stitched strips and sliced and diced and stitched and I am not done yet....

Mom and Me --- Making This Year's Donation Quilt

Here we are proudly displaying the first completed block of our donation quilt.  We decided to do all greens this year for our courthouse round quilt.  Mom purchased the green fabrics and supplies for the quilt. I cut the strips. Mom lays out all the strips for each block on paper towels in a pizza box. 

I cut each green fabric into strips of all 4 sizes needed for each round of the courthouse round, thus giving us a large variety of greens for the block. We started with about 35 different greens and later added a few more!

Then I place the cut strips into the drawer organizer to make it easier to select the strips for the rounds for Mom to lay out on the paper towels.

We are big fan of blues, but we are loving all the greens...

Then I take two blocks at a time and sew them together.  This isn't a fast method for making the blocks, but it is an organized way of making them, as each block is very carefully planned out, so all the greens look great together.

Of course, we took over the dining room --- It is my favorite place to sew.  Lots of light - not so good for taking a picture, but I wanted you to see where we were sewing.

The dogs wanted to be in the photo too.  They are always under our feet as we sew.

We donate the completed quilt to the Fireside Dinner Theater of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. They raffle it to raise money for Rainbow Hospice of Jefferson County.
This is last year's donation quilt. The Fireside raised almost $3000. in the raffle for Rainbow Hospice.
Rainbow Hospice is near and dear to our hearts as they took wonderful care of my Dad 16 years ago. He died of cancer.  Each year, my Mom and I make a donation quilt in his memory.  

Now it is is my job to complete all the blocks for our donation quilt. Then I will assemble it and quilt it. I will share more pictures later.
