Zig Zagging, Kissing, Quilting, and Cooking?

Remember, I made too many blocks, so I made three little quilts.

Quilt Number One: The Kissing Quilt

Quilt Number Two: Ziggin' Outside the Block

Quilt Number Three: Straight Line Zigging

No binding on this quilt, because I will take it with me to a Quilt Retreat in April and make it into a zipper bag.


Quilt Number One: The Kissing Quilt
I used a green fine point sharpie marker to write the words that I wanted to thread paint.

First I overall quilted the center of the quilt and wiggle line and zig zag quilted the border.

Next, I started the thread painting on the lettering.

Stitched my name and year in the bottom right hand corner of the quilt.

All done quilting - trimmed and ready to bind.

I chose black fabric for the binding.  Wrapped it around to see how it looked.

Flipped it over so you can see the back of the quilt and hanging sleeve.

I hung it up on the wall to get a vertical photo.

Maybe it should have said: I quilt better than I cook!


Quilt Number Two: Ziggin' Outside the Block
I used two thread colors for this quilt too. A lite tan and olive green.  I started with the tan thread - zigging and zagging in the open area. I triple wiggle line quilted around the green strips.

Then I zig zagged with the green thread shadowing the tan stitching lines.  I also zig zag on the green strips.

 I really had fun with the quilting on this project.

Quilt Number Three: Straight Line Zigging
Before Quilting it looked like this.

The quilting on this one was all little zig zags going in and out of the zig zags.

Keep in mind these are little zig zags, as the blocks are only 2 3/4" in size.

I like the backs almost as much as the fronts!
I folded this one in half, so you can imagine how it will look as a zipper bag.

I think of my Kissing Quilt as my Bonus Quilt.  I used the leftover scraps to make it.  I guess, I would have to say the Straight Line Zigging is a Bonus Quilt too.

I will be proposing a May for Me Quilt Challenge in mid April.  I am seriously thinking of using the construction method for the zig zag block as the challenge.  I am still looking for input about that.  You could use up all those little strips and scraps.  It would make a great baby quilt or a lap quilt.  
I tried another arrangement and came up with a little maze quilt.  Just think of all the ways you can arrange the blocks to make an even more complicated maze!  I did not quilt it yet -- maybe next week.

Ziggin' and Zaggin' - Part One

I started with the left over strips from my scrappy green courthouse round quilt.  

Those strips were 1 1/2" wide and I cut some more green strips 2" wide. I cut some 6" squares from a cream quilter's blenders.

I stitched the skinny strips on opposite sides first and then pressed.  

I stitched the wider strips on the other two sides and pressed.

I sliced the block in half both ways - see photos. 

I now have four squares with green strips on two sides from every block.
I squared all of them up at an angle to 3 1/4" square - see photos.

I started laying out the blocks and tried several different arrangements. First all going in one direction.

 Then opposite directions.

Then with an extra cream block in between the blocks with the blocks placed opposite from each other.

I liked this arrangement and started sewing them together in rows.

All pressed and ready to quilt.

Oh, no!  -  I made too many blocks!  I stitched a few more blocks together creating a different pattern.

I love the zig zag border.  I will have to quilt a cool design in the center.  All pressed and ready to quilt.


There are still more blocks left!  I tried another pattern.  I like this one too.  I will have to quilt a zig zag design inbetween the blocks. I like that idea.

I started quilting all three little quilts late this afternoon.  I will share the quilted photos tomorrow.


I used a similar block design last year, when I made a baby quilt, but I used the strips as lattice strips, not to create a zig zag pattern.

Do you like the zig zag block?

There could be tons of different arrangements for the blocks.  I am looking for a challenge quilt for the May for Me Celebration.  This could be one of the possibilities.  
Help me decide, let me know if you would want to make a small quilt using the zig zag blocks to create your own design. You would use leftover strips and scraps to make the quilt.
