More Baby Burp Cloths!

Yes I am a quilter, but I also sew!  

Two years ago, I made baby burp cloths for my daughter for her new baby.  She loved them then and still loves them now, as they still use them. They are soft for wiping a little face. They take them in their travel bag for a quick clean up.

I have a blueberry burp cloth on my shoulder in this photo. These were the ones I made 2 years ago.  I love being a Grandmama!

I did not really use baby fabric, but it was what I had in my fabric stash and I loved the fabrics!

I did have vintage looking baby carriage fabric and I made these for my daughter.  I wish I had more of this fabric!

You do not have to buy them in twos, I just took photos in groups.

Most of the fabrics are one of a kind and I don't usually have more of the fabric.

I have more Teddy Bears, but no mint green flannel left, but I have blue.  I have more pink and blue bicycles and jump ropes fabric and can be made with flannel in blue, cream, or pink.

Not just a Long Arm Quilter --- I Sew too!

I made this cute little baby blanket from my quilting fabric and just added flannel fabric to the back side.  That's a "recipe" for a great baby blanket. I have several customers who don't sew --- I sew for them!

Here's how I made the baby blanket: 

I cut 2 pieces of fabric approximately 26" X 39". Just need to make a rectangular size. I pressed/ironed both pieces, so they were nice and flat.  Placed them with right sides (pretty sides) together and then lined up the edges and stitched with a seam allowance of 3/8" on all 4 sides leaving an opening about 4" to 5" in the middle of one side. Note:  If your fabric is shifting as you sew -- use pins!  I clipped the corners. That makes less bulk, when I turned it inside out.  I turned it inside out and carefully poked out each corner from the inside.  Pressed/ironed it again.  Then I top stitched with a coordinating thread color. As I top stitched, I made sure I pressed in the edges at the turning opening and stitched it closed.

I used some of the fabric to make baby burp cloths to match the baby blanket.

Then I decided I needed more!

Wooden Shoes, Grand Baby, and Baby Quilts

Tourists have to have their photo taken in a wooden shoe!

This next photo needs no words....

My Grand Baby was a month old when we arrived for our first visit to the Netherlands.  Yes --- he is laying on a quilt I made and is covered up with a baby burp cloth!

The little quilt I made works perfect in his bassinet.

I made this quilt for a wall hanging, but we tucked in the sides and put it in the bassinet for a photo. It would fit better in the regular size crib or of course on the wall.

We covered him up with the quilt for another photo. He will be ready for winter's cool nights.

My daughter tells me that years from now she will tell her son that his Grandmama and Grandpapa traveled over 5000 miles just to sniff his sweet little head.  Yep it was worth the long airplane ride and the jet lag!

Yes, we took a photo in front of almost every windmill. That is what tourists do!

I also found some wooden shoes that I could step into for another photo. 

It was wonderful to visit my daughter, her husband and the new baby.  It was so hard to leave. I tear up often.  Thank goodness for computers and Skype as we can see our grand baby every day!

I have said it many times before:  "Don't be sad that it is over, be glad you did it!" and that is perfect for this. We are so blessed to have had such a wonderful vacation and a wonderful time with our family in the Netherlands.

Hodgepodge Patchwork Tuesday - How I Make Baby Burp Cloths

Fat quarters work perfect for the baby burp cloths.  I use quilting fabrics for one side and flannel fabrics for the other side.  Cut the fat quarter in half lengthwise.  9" X 21"  Gives you two front sides.

If I don't have a fat quarter and I am using my leftover quilting scraps, I may make it a little wider or a little shorter.  Just need a long rectangle of 2 pieces of fabric.

Place the 2 long rectangles pretty sides together. I do not add batting or extra fabric.  It is just two layers of fabric.

Press/Iron the rectangles so they lay nice and flat. Trim the sides even. It should be approximately 9 inches wide.

Use a bowl or a plate to round the ends of the fabric. Rotary cut through both layers with the pretty sides together.

It is ready to sew. I stitch with a seam allowance of 3/8" . Start on one straight side and stitch around the ends and back around.  Stop to leave an opening of about 3 to 4 inches.

You can see the opening in this photo.  Snip v's around both curved ends, being very careful not to snip through the stitching.  If you do, just go back and stitch it again.

Turn right side out.

Press/Iron so the edges are nice and even. I use my fingers to squeeze and crease the edges together before I press.

Press/Iron the opening flat and even.

You will stitch it closed, when you top stitch on the next step.

Top stitch 1/4" from the edge.

Go slow around the corners.

I made some matching sets of baby burp cloths.

 Some I just made a couple.

I will have several ready for baby gifts.

This one was a scrap of vintage umbrella fabric.  I made this one a little wider and stitched two rows of top stitching.

Bicycles and jump ropes -  Love this fabric!

I completed 15 baby burp cloths in an afternoon of sewing.  I have several other sets all cut and ready to sew, when I need more.

Get out that leftover quilting fabric and some flannels and stitch up a few!
