Free Crazee Patch Paper Pieced Heart

I created my "Crazee Patch Paper Pieced Heart Pattern" in 2007. With a group of local quilters, we made a quilt for at Breast Cancer Fundraiser. In 2011, we made another one! I love making the Hearts!

Last year, I made a BLUE Heart for me and I posted about it here.

You know, I love BLUES!

I had planned to take time to add borders and make a table topper for the center of my dining room table, but that did not happen!

I selected some of my favorite blues.

My PDF Pattern includes the paper pattern for printed to sew on and several photos of the Crazee Patch Heart in a quilt and as mini quilts and other ideas. It does not include instructions for paper piecing. You can find tons of "How To Paper Piece Tutorials" online.

Charming Baby Toys - Free Pattern

These colorful stuffed toys were made from 5 inch charm squares.

You need 2 charm squares of each color.

Place them pretty sides together.

Stitch 1/4 inch seam allowance all the way around leaving an opening of about 2 inches.  Stitch twice.

Clip the corners off, close to the stitching on each corner.

Turn right side out.

Poke each corner out from the inside.

Stuff with whatever you think is best for your baby toys.  I selected poly batting that I cut up into little squares.

Hand or machine stitch the opening closed. I hand stitched them closed.

  
The finished square toy measures about 4 1/2".

I lined them up like a color wheel with the primary colors in the center - Red, Yellow and Blue. Then I placed the secondary colors around them - Orange, Purple, and Green.

Lined them up in rows.

Then in a pile! I had fun playing with them.  I hope my grandson loves them too.

I also cut out some toys from some novelty fabrics I had. I stitched them the same way.  But no corners - all rounded edges. 

I love the blue butterfly. That represents me - Grandmama.

I decided I needed a fish to represent Grandpapa, because he loves to fish. 

and I needed a cow and pig for Wisconsin's farms.

Then I threw them all together in one pile.

I have to say, I had fun making them too!

Hodgepodge Patchwork -- Cell Phone Purses

This Winter for Project Quilting I created a table topper for my dinning room table made from only 2 colors. I made it look like a gum wrapper chain.  I had some extra scraps and I pieced them together. I quilted it at the same time that I quilted the table topper.

I had no idea what I would make with it.  It was too small for a place mat.  It could be used as a rectangular hot pad.

  
It measured 10 inches wide by 13 inches long. Well, last week I taught a tote bag class in my home. I got out all my quilted pieces.  I needed to demonstrate how I add the binding on the sides.  If I cut it in half.  5 inches by 13 inches long, I could make a cell phone purse or two!

5 inches wide fit nicely around my phone. I wanted a flap on the top of it.  I will share the free instructions for the cell phone purse at the end of this post.  For this purse, I added the flap and velcro. If you sew, I think you can see from the photos, how I bound the flap and attached the velcro. But the free instructions will help you with the binding and the strap.  See this photo for the flap and the strap attachment.

It is easy to open and pull out also.

I made the strap long enough to go over my head and arm for traveling or for just wearing it as a large quilted necklace.

It's another Free Quilt Pattern for you!

Made from Six Fat Quarters.

Finished size is 39.5 X 46"

Great size for a baby quilt or a small lap quilt. You could add a border and make it larger.

Green, Yellow, Blue, Orange, Purple, and Red

Press/Iron the Fat Quarters.

Layer all 6 Fat Quarters, if you have a large rotary cutter that will cut through all 6 layers.  If not, layer 2 fat quarters and cut 2 at a time, together.

Rotary trim the edges.  Do not trim away too much fabric.

Lay your fat quarters with the bottom edge --- 18" and with the length --- 21".

Rotary cut two strips --- 7" X 21"
and cut the strip on the far left --- 3 3/4" X 21"

Rotary trim the ends.

Cross cut the 7" X 21" strips into six 7" X 7" Squares.  This gives you six squares of each color.

Your last strip is 3 3/4" X 21" strip.  Cut that strip into five 3 3/4" X 3 3/4" Squares.

You have cut thirty-six 7" X 7" squares and thirty 3 3/4" X 3 3/4" squares from 6 fat quarters.

I took a photo with my new flower appetizer plate. I love all the colorful squares.

Let yourself be inspired by things around you.  I may free style quilt flowers on my quilt!

Next, randomly sew the 3 3/4" X 3 3/4" into 4 patches. They should measure 7" X 7" when completed. 

You will have two leftover squares after you make seven 4 patch blocks.

I prefer to layout my squares somewhat randomly and with a little order to the placement of the colors.  I placed one of each color in each row and added the 4 patch blocks randomly too.

After you lay out the squares, you will have one 7" X 7" square and two 3 3/4 squares leftover.

I put mine together in my camping sewing room.  That is why I say you need to have a little order, to the construction, especially if you have a limited working area. I put one of each color randomly in each row with one 4 patch.  There will be six rows of 7 squares.  In one of the rows I added another 4 patch (you have 7 four patches) or you could add the leftover solid square instead.  Whatever looks "eye pleasing" to you.

It is OK to have the colors close to each other. It is OK to have the 4 patch color with the orange, next to the orange 7 inch square.  Same with the blue next to the blue.

Mine are scattered randomly and it looks great! Yes that is just my opinion!

One color in every row and forming a pattern at an angle across the quilt.

Either way it looks great!
