Sunday Scraps!

I love to play with fabric scraps!

Saturday afternoon, I gathered up all the small scrap pieces from my table runner (A Sunset for Every Day) and hot pad.

I created a quick place mat.

I have created and constructed with this method before and I shared a couple PDF patterns on Craftsy.com.

Scrappy Place Mat explains in detail with tons of photos and I used lite heat and bond for this place mat. The PDF Pattern is only $1.00.

and Scrappy Greeting Cards  is a similar method, but you stitch the scraps onto card stock. The PDF Pattern is only $1.00.

Both PDF Patterns explain in detail the whole process with tons of photos.

Today, I did not use heat on bond on the backs of my pieces.  I want my pieces to naturally fray when I wash them. I am going to share a ton of photos to show you how I made it.

Fabric should be cut larger than you want your place mat to be, by at last an inch or so. I used 80/20 batting (Cotton/Poly).

I selected a tiny stretch stitch on my sewing machine to raw edge applique the triangles in place. You can use any stitch, but I like this one the best.

One done!

I am doing this free form, but I decided to do a little planning and pick the spots for the next two pinwheels.

Stitch a line to connect them.  Just having fun ... whatever feels right.  It's free form!

I decided to stitch around the pinwheels like a shadowing.

Here is the back side.

Then I decided to stitch some pinwheels around the other pinwheels, but I could have added more pinwheels.  I had lots of scraps.

I ran out of the top thread. I rethreaded my machine with another orangish-yellow, but guess what happened?

I was able to take it all out, without making a hole in the fabric.  If it had made a hole in the fabric, I would have appliqued another pin wheel in that spot.  It is free form so it would not matter where they ended up on the place mat.

Yep!  I like it!

Trim it to the size. I cut mine 12" by 17".

I zig zagged the edge for the binding. Yes it will natural fray there too.  If you do not like raw edges you should add a binding.

Ready to serve lunch!

I had fun taking photos at different angles.

And some photos of the back. It could be reversible.

It was a great way to use my scraps!

Enjoy your day!

Sunday Scraps --- More Crocheted Circular Mats

I sold the one on the left and I am making the one on the right larger.  It will be listed for sale too.

At this point, it measures about 17 1/2 inches.

This is the one I sold. It measured 14 inches across.

I shipped it out on Friday.

I cut or tear the strips. It doesn't matter. The smaller mat, the strips were about 3/4 inch wide. The larger mat, the strips were almost an inch wide.

I tie a square knot to hold the strips together.

Sharing a photo of the completed larger mat - 19 inches.

Here is an up close photo of the crocheting.

Love the corning ware on the mat!

This morning I baked a Banana Bundt Cake and placed it on my new quilt plate and the mat.

I still love the snow photos the best. I will have to take a photo of the larger one tomorrow.

Enjoy!

Hodgepodge Patchwork Tuesday Featuring Sunday's Scraps!

The Scrappy Squares Place Mat is available as a PDF Downloadable at Craftsy.com in my Craftsy Pattern Store for only $1.00.  Click HERE for the direct link to my Store.

There were three leftover pieces from the Rainbow Quilt from last week.

I love to create using my scraps.

Here are my three scraps.  One seven inch square and two 3 3/4 inch squares.

I went through some of my colorful fat quarters.

I was looking for the right print.

I chose this print. It wasn't even a full fat quarter, but it will be larger enough to make a place mat.

I pressed/ironed the pieces and the print fabric.

I cut the Heat n Bond Lite a little smaller than the pieces.

I pressed/ironed the Heat n Bond to the back of the squares. Then I rotary trimmed the edges.

I cut the squares into random sizes of squares and rectangles. No exact sizes.

I peeled the papers off the backs.

I scattered them around on the print fabric.

I layered them in a row to see how that would look.

I decided there were scraps from the print fabric I could use too!

I pressed/iron Heat n Bond Lite to the back of the scraps of the print fabric.

Rotary trimmed it and cut it into randomly sized squares.

Scattered them on the fabric.

Finally decided to layer the prints on the solids with a bit of an offset look.

Pressed/ironed them in place.

I left a few just solid.

I like it!

I chose the green dot print for the back of it.

I chose an 80/20 batting.

Pinned it.

Green thread or multi colored thread?  I selected the green thread.

Yes --- I am quilting it on my regular sewing machine!

I selected an embroidery stitch -- a stretch stitch.

I started in the corners of the squares, close to the edges.  That way, I could angle up and not have to start and stop quite as much.

I like how the back looks too!

I stitched around the edge.

My plan it to leave it with the raw edges, but it certainly could have binding.

A close up of the corner --- see how the batting is shorter for the raw edge effect.

One completed place mat made from scraps!

Looks great with my corning ware and blue cup....

and an old bowl too.

I love it with the appetizer plate!

Do you remember these other two projects?

The one on the left, I called Mix and Match.  I made from scraps too.

The one on the right is from Project Quilting -- Quilts Built by Imagination.

All were created in a very similar way.

Enjoy your day!
